Scope and Contents

Linda Lee Brown collected personal narratives about ouija boards.Included are stories about ouija boards that stopped working when a Priesthood holder was present, girls getting locked inside a room by an invisible force that prevented anyone from getting in or out, and a ouija board that correctly that a girl would kill herself. Project was written for Dr. Cheney's English 367 class taught at Brigham Young University in 1968.

This project is a collection of family Thanksgiving recipes. The collector comments on her love of cooking, and the central role that meals and food preparation have on Thanksgiving. Family recipes include pies, vegetables, Jello, drinks, stuffing, dips/sauces, turkey, rolls, and desserts. Collected by Janelle Weber, Professor Rudy's ENGL 495 class, Winter 1999.

Pfister collected stories of her father's work in the San Diego, California fire department. Included are stories of successful rescues, injuries to firefighters, pranks the firefighters pull on each other and tragic stories of bodies found after a fire. A fly in holy ointment : an analysis of the trickster's role / Becky Tanner, 1998

Tanner does a comparison between her great uncle, Ned Winder, and J. Golden Kimball, a prominent figure in the Mormon Church. Both characters hold similar reputations for their humor, off-colored language, and love for the gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Created by Becky Tanner when she was enrolled in Jill Terry Rudy's English 391 class in Fall 1998.

Thomson collected stories of engagements and proposals. Included are stories of a man proposing in the mountains by a pond, a man who made a resume for his future wife and her father, and a man who gave the ring box to a mall Santa Clause and made his girlfriend sit on his lap and say she'd been a good girl all year. The project was written for Dr. Rudy's English 392 class taught at Brigham Young University in 1997.

Mills analyzes Mormon missionary story folklore and then divides it into categories that reflect on its subject matter. Mills discusses each category of missionary folklore and then charts similarities in the content of their stories on a visual diagram. He then analyzes the occurrence of several themes in the personal narratives and rumors that he collected for this project. Created by Allen A. Mills when he was enrolled in Dierdre Paulsen's English 303 class in fall 2003.

David Jensen collected folklore about fishing. Scope and Contents note Jensen collects folklore from the Cottonwood Drama Club and analyzes it in terms of its traditional, artistic, social, and creative functions. She divides the types of folklore into the traditions surrounding initiation, graduation, and pre- and post-show rituals. She suggests that drama kids use folkloric traditions and rituals to establish camaraderie in a group that stereotypically consists of outcasts and eccentrics.
